Once known as South Tyrol, Alto-Adige was ceded to Italy by Austria after World War I; and here German, not Italian, is the primary language. Being so far in the north, the region is known for its white wines—and it is where the müller thurgau grape truly shines. The Roeno is lovely and vibrant with beautiful grapefruit and floral notes (especially elderflower); and the palate is dry with a succulent creaminess making it ideal on its own, with starters, rice and vegetable dishes, and grilled fish.
