Ribera del Duero has been challenging Rioja as Spain’s leading red wine. Inland along the Duero River (aka, the Douro in Portugal), the climate on this large plateau is tricky—with frosts into spring and summer days that regularly break 100 degrees. The resulting wine though is sensational! Grapes grown on old vines (over 100 years old!) and fermented and aged in stainless steel, this wine has a deeply rich nose that draws you into the glass. It has size but isn’t heavy, with dark red fruit, firm tannins, and a long finish. Have it with aged cheeses, pork sausages, or steak.
